If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint – Edward Hopper
Copper & Rust
I have always loved copper, especially when it includes rich green verdigris. Very difficult to paint with it's shiny reflections.
I tackled this exact subject whilst taking my A'level Art back in the late seventies which I am very pleased to say gained me the qualification!
Rust! Seaside rust is the best, turned by the salty sea air, with it's reds and oranges, rich and glowing
The Process
Blocking in
The board has been primed with a few layers of white gesso, then a rough pencil sketch to layout the composition. As this painting is worked in oils I would start with the background colour first and then the darkest tone
Colour and Tone
When painting in oils I would firstly concentrate on the shadows and darker areas, using thin layers of paint diluted with white spirit to build up the surface and add form. I would then finish with the lighter areas, adding highlights
Framing
Choosing the right frame for any painting to accommodate is most important. The colour, finish, material and size of the frame are all critical elements of the final piece and is as important as the art itself

Beside the Sea
I have always felt my happiest by the sea. Whether it be Mevagissey or Menorca, there is something mesmeric about the flowing waves and the ever changing tides affected by the moons gravitational pull. Very happy childhood memories of holidays at the seaside

Passion Fruit
Painted during lockdown using reference from my garden
My beautiful Passion flower vine grew fiercely against my fence and there were so many fruits and flowers this year, guess the lovely weather helped.
Have always loved the delicate flowers with their intricate detail, but quite tricky to paint!
The Process
Arranging the still life
Passion fruit collected from my garden at different stages of ripeness
Adding to the subject matter
Adding a stem with leaves and a stunning passionflower to add interest and variety to the composition
Blocking in
Working from a dark background to create form using thin layers of oil paint
Colour and tone
Adding a thin layer of background colour to help with the tone and shape of the composition
